St Peter Chanel

Born Pierre Louis Marie Chanel (12 July 1803 – 28 April 1841) this Marist priest from France became the first Martyr of Oceania: Saint Peter Chanel. He is the patron saint of the New Zealand Catholic Church.

This is probably the most famous picture of Saint Peter Chanel. It is interesting to know that it was apparently his sister who sat for the portrait as there were no pictures of her martyred brother…
