Pope Paul VI, the pope who closed the Second Vatican Council, Vatican II, was convinced that reaching out to the Eastern Orthodox and Protestant churches and other religions would make the world more peaceful. When he flew to Jordan in 1964, it was the first time a reigning pontiff had left Italy in more than a century.
