St Peter Chanel

Born Pierre Louis Marie Chanel (12 July 1803 – 28 April 1841) this Marist priest from France became the first Martyr of Oceania: Saint Peter Chanel. He is the patron saint of the New Zealand Catholic Church.
Some years ago Bishop Stuart O’Connell sm shared his knowledge about St Peter Chanel in a Muffin Talk.

This is probably the most famous picture of Saint Peter Chanel. It is interesting to know that it was apparently his sister who sat for the portrait as there were no pictures of her martyred brother…

Fr Chris Skinner sm wrote a song about St Peter Chanel which is available here. The title of the song is “We sing Chanel”.
